When Life Gives You Lemons

But what if you don’t have any sugar? What if you’ve had to make lemonade so, so, so many times that you’ve run out of it? What if you’re tired of always having to add sugar? Just for once, can some sugar come with the lemons?

As I wrote that, I remembered the one time that it did. When you get a rejection for a job that compliments you, that is the epitome of getting lemons with sugar. It encourages you to make lemonade because something will come where you won’t have to.

Maybe I’m forcing myself to receive lemons. Maybe I’m not good enough to receive anything but.

Consistency

I never really feel I have anything important to say, so I hesitate to do these posts. Right now, though, it is about being consistent with posting. So it may not be another post in the same week as the first, but it is a second post a week later. A start is a start, regardless of how big.

I feel like a lot of things started to change after I graduated with my BA. I broke my ankle a couple of weeks after I graduated, right after my now-husband, then-fiance and I moved into our new apartment. I already had walking issues before that but after that happened, I suddenly could no longer really walk by myself, I needed to touch a wall or hold an arm. Suddenly, I wasn’t doing things on my own and I was always stuck in the apartment. My goals seemed to be now restricted and had to be rethought. It was like I forgot how to walk like how I did before. Everything had to be rethought. I am still in the midst of it, but a lot of it has to do with having the self-confidence that I can do things and have the career I want even if I have walking issues. It’s a process.

A big goal of this year has been to get back to reading more, figure out what I want out of life, and to focus more on self-love. My Goodreads goal has been a book a month and I’ve almost been able to meet that. This isn’t a lot and I realize that, but it’s better than in the recent past. That hasn’t slowed down the number of books I buy but that won’t change.

HEYYYYO

Try and Try Again

Time and time again I have tried to be consistent with blogging or journaling or whichever word you want to use. It always ends with me being consistent for maybe a month at the most, then missing a day, then a couple, then a week behind. Finally, I’ll just stop because it gets to a point where I can’t catch up. But, a lot of changes are happening in my life right now and I think I’m going to try again. Maybe not daily, because like before I’ll start going hard and end up stopping. Maybe just two days a week for now. Maybe three. I don’t know but you gotta start somewhere I guess. Not sure how these are going to look or what they’ll be, but they’ll be something.

I recently resigned from my main job for personal and commute reasons and am looking for a new position and/or more freelance work. I have had more freelance work opportunities this year, including dissertations and fiction novels. I want to get back into more consistently writing creatively. I also want to work on me overall, whatever that entails.

Gaming

Borderlands 3 comes out in less than a month. I have been almost obsessively playing Borderlands 2 to contain my excitement for now. It honestly just makes me more excited about seeing Tiny (now not-so-tiny) Tina in the new game. BL2 has become one of my favorite games this past year, although the first time I played it was a while ago. I preordered so I’ll be picking up my copy on release day.

I’m playing with Maya the Siren in BL2; she was the only female (before the Season Pass added Gaige) so that is initially how I chose to play as her. After the first time playing as her, I chose her again because her abilities are just amazing and I love having the elemental control. In the Pre-Sequel, I play as Nisha because she’s a woman-of-color and a badass gunslinger. Just an all-around great option. Additionally, if you’ve played BL2, she’s the sheriff of Lynchwood. It’s awesome to play as a character who actually becomes a baddie you have to go against (she killed Brick’s dog!) if you decide to go to Lynchwood (which you should) in BL2 even though there are no story missions there (it’s worth it, seriously, the lore and side quests are cool and you’ll get a cool gun from the Sheriff).

For BL3, I’m thinking I’ll do my first playthrough as Amara because she’s a woman of color and a siren. Her powers intrigue me. Eventually, I am also going to do a Fl4k playthrough (pets!) and a Zane (the clone! the defense shield!) but Amara gets priority.

A Little Bit More

My husband and I just got back from our anniversary cruise on Carnival Breeze. This was our second cruise with cruise director Marc Q. This cruise with him was wayyyyyyy better than the first. He was a better CD this time but also we just had better customer service overall this time. I also turned platinum.

One of my fav artists, Jidenna, has a new cd coming out this week: 85 to Africa. If you’ve never heard him, check out his NPR Tiny Desk concert.

Since we’re talking about music, also check out Lizzo’s Tiny Desk concert.

I also have Cyberpunk 2077 and The OuterWorlds preordered.

Promotional Trends in Movies

It’s hard to keep up with the different stages that DC and Marvel universes are in respectively. I just know they keep producing block busters and somehow keep breaking movie records. Part of this is because there are millions of comic book fans that turn out to see their favorite superhero on the big screen (for some the first time, for some again). But another part is how movies are being promoted.

One change is movie reviews are more popular, in a positive and negative way. More people are reading them to decide whether or not to spend their money. In a way, this is a type of promotional writing as well. Some people write them as promotional pieces, encouraging people to go see it. Others read it and don’t listen to the opinion.

The Roman artist, Ovid, incorporated cialis professional no prescription pine nuts in his catalogue of aphrodisiacs. This is completely okay with a deeprootsmag.org viagra order cheap normal level of nitric oxide. Another way movies are being promoted is by the release of multiple trailers. For example, Marvel released three more clips of the new Doctor Strange movie. With Captain America: Civil War, they released forty trailers. It seems the higher the budget and need for a large turnout, the more promotion they get. The problem with releasing a high amount of trailers is it makes viewers wonder, what’s left to see? For my fiance, he was disappointed with the movie because the trailers spoiled almost everything.

On one hand, I get it. They feel a need to consistently promote so that people are excited for and will spend money to see it. On the other hand, over-saturation of promotional materials may turn off some consumers instead of excite.

You Can’t Trust Everything You Read on The Internet

One of the hardest lessons to learn about the internet is that people lie. For whatever reason, we want to believe that news on the internet will always be true. Who would lie about news? Well, here’s a case of a joke not gotten. Marco Chacon’s website “RealTrueNews” was meant to mock the news from conservative sites, but instead of a joke people believed that it was true news.

Good promotional writing is all about being able to replicate the successful content so consumers are also interested in your site. A good type of promotional writing to compare this to is native advertising, which are advertising pieces meant to trick the reader into thinking it is normal content. Language Sells

The most important key to promoting, persuading, or selling to a consumer is the language. This  article by Tara Swiger on Renatom.net is all about learning a customer’s language. This specific post discusses how to merge the language you use for work with the language the customer would use and be attracted to. What is the duration best buy viagra of effects? The thing that turns me off about this article is how she makes it seem like it’s a foreign language you’re learning. It’s not. That being said there are some good points and tips to take away from it.

The important take away: learn from your customer by paying attention to their language and “translating” it into how you would word it.

Promoting to People of Color: Language and Promotional Tactics

When studying rhetoric and writing, rhetoric can have a fluid definition. A simple definition of rhetoric that I use is the methods of persuasion used to influence potential consumers in promotional materials, written materials, document design, and advertising. So every advertisement that’s on TV, in magazines, on Billboards, and every written copy by a business considers how it could and should influence its audience. This is more successful when there’s a particular audience in mind.

According to the US Census Bureau, 43 million people in the United States are black, making up 14.3 percent of the population (BlackDemographics.com). In combination with the other minorities in the country, the United States is on track to become a minority majority country. It is no wonder that appeals to people of color are all the more important now. But, what does it mean to appeal to people of color in promotional writing?

There aren’t a lot of documents about promotional writing or ads to people of color. On one hand, my response to this is they are people with similar needs and views as other races, so why would there need to be specific tactics and language to promote to black consumers? On the other hand, why wouldn’t there be? As a general species, or as citizens, there are some things that we all need although we have different views on what they should be. This includes bigger topics, such as what points of view the President of our country should have, which religion to choose, if abortion is ok or not, or smaller things such as which pizza is better, the best place to go shopping, or what singer’s album is the best. But individual cultures can view the same topics in a different way as well. One singer may be directly targeting a specific culture with those experiences or a store may sell culture specific food or clothing. It would make sense for there to be language and tactics used to target that audience’s business.

So what is it? As a black woman, I had to have a conversation with my fiancé, a black man, to try and figure out how promotional materials use language to attract people of color to a product or service. His response, which was incredibly interesting but not helpful to this article, was that “promotional materials and ads targeting African Americans use a visual trickle down affect. They show a famous person wearing jewelry, or a cologne, or expensive clothes, and then younger black people want them. With Jordans, they end up wanting to have that persona Michael has and they use the shoes to kind of have that status.”

When doing different searches for promotional writing for black/African American audiences, not a lot comes up, but one very interesting document did. Promotions West has a booklet for teaching markets how to write material and plan an event targeting African Americans and their communities. The objectives start pretty standard, including identifying the target audience, objectives, goals, and deciding how to reach them and how much the budget it. However, when it starts to talk about building contacts in the community, the first two tips in mentions are “develop a list or churches in your target community” and “utilize schools, churches, restaurants, barbershops, hair salons, and other establishments to educate the community on key issues.” These are specific targeting spots where it is assumed black influence and gossip come into play. There are three Barbershop movies (Barbershop, Barbershop 2, Barbershop: The Next Cut) showing their role in the black community and churches and barbershops are common campaign stops to try and garner black support. They also list of agencies that either target “African Americans” or that are black groups, such as local NAACP chapters.

Initially, I wasn’t sure if I should take this as a joke or if it was serious, but there is one paragraph that explains why it is necessary to have promotions that specifically target people of color and their communities, and not just general communities:

“More often than not, groups or organizations will prepare a promotional event or health model/program for an intended audience without ever speaking to them or entering their community. This idea rallies on the “Father Knows Best” theory that speaks down to communities who are lost and unable to help themselves. It’s also a model that health departments across the country copy over and over again which is a recipe for disaster. Do not make the same mistake or it will cost you your credibility in the community. (page 9)”

It’s not always easy to determine the best way to promote to people of color. Some language that black businesses or freelancers may use to attract other black people can get overlooked because they get taken into mainstream media and used by other cultures. This article by Zeba Blay for Huffington Post talks about words that were invented by black people but were adopted into popular culture with their origin forgotten. Though most of the words are words that would not be used for promotional material, it sheds light to why it is hard to really think of language used to target people of color.

This is the first of three posts in a multi-post series about promotional language addressed to people of color.

Promoting Hair Care to People of Color

As I was shopping in CVS for some sinus medicine, I walked past the make-up and hair isle because I am slightly obsessed. I saw an advertisement for Carol’s Daughter, a line of all natural hair products. It featured two black women with different hair textures and said something along the lines of “all styles, all natural.” It dawned how far black hair has come, and how most new black hair products feature some, if not all, all-natural products.

I was born with a full head of hair. When I was younger, I always had afros and puffballs. I was literally the embodiment of “baby hair and afros” from Beyonce’s song Formation. As I got older, my mom, who is white, had a hard time working with the hair that I got from my dad, who is black. I don’t remember how old I was when I started getting my hair relaxed, but I was young. It is something that, back then, a lot of black children went through. A relaxer is a chemical process that strips the natural curl from hair and makes it straight and easier to manage. Though I went to a salon and got my hair done, these chemical products were all I saw when I was younger in the “beauty/hair” isle. Now, there is a hair revolution going on in the black community, a revolution to bring back natural hair.

Starting with Madam C,J. Walker in the late 19th century and continuing to companies like Shea Moisture, Miss Jessie’s, Jane Carter, ORS, and others, they are helping provide black women products to help them care for their natural hair. They are also promoting these materials in a way for black citizens to know it’s for them. There are products to use with treated hair as well, like this or this Carol’s Daughter line, but a lot of promotional materials feature their all-natural products and language referencing the positivity of this. Like this Shea Moisture ad saying “Beauty is Organic.” These promotional marketing ads that target and focus on the black community are advertising a company by and for black people. Because of this they often feature black women with different hair textures and hair styles with language, like “all natural” or “be you” and adjectives like beautiful or soft. Miss Jessie’s uses African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in some ads, like popping, conversational English, like shout-out, or hair styles like twist-outs. One of my favorite ads from Shea Moisture says “Embrace your roots.” This has a double meaning of literal hair roots and not what we try to make it, and our race/ethnic roots, which means a lot to people of color.

Companies that are not strictly focused on black hair care but who advertise a “multicultural” product do not vary their language very much, but keep it to what their brand uses and change the model. An example of a company trying to broaden their reach is Herbal Essence. They are using more people of color in ads and trying to show that their products are not for one hair type. However, the language used in one ad featuring a black woman is sexualized (see below). This further perpetuates the stereotype of black women as sexualized individuals. In their defense, a lot of their language used to advertise their “naturally irresistible hair” is sexualized. Another, perhaps better, example is Pantene, a salon-quality hair product line. They frequently use people of color in ads, such as Selena Gomez and Eva Mendez. Their language is very conversational and straight to the point, featuring action verbs and a hair benefit the product gives; an example is “DARE to do the style not the damage.” Some of their promotional materials feature inspiring language that turn negative stereotypes upside-down. For example, the add featuring the black woman below is encouraging women who see it that they not only have the power within them to shine, but this product can help with it too. For black women specifically, who are so often told they are not pretty enough, this is extremely important language to be used in a promotional poster featuring a black woman. There is still the issue of needing straight or “normalized” hair to shine, but baby steps.

I stopped getting my hair treated with chemicals between two and three years ago. I stopped getting my hair relaxed between eight and ten years ago. Now it’s a journey learning to treat and love my hair how it is and a big part of that is because of the promotional pieces I’ve seen. There has been an amazing increase in hair products and beauty supplies that focus on black woman. It’s not just the relaxed hair anymore, but natural products for black hair and mixed hair. The section in the grocery isle is no long a pathetic, one-foot shelf in the “ethnic hair” section, but half an isle with numerous options for black hair and mixed hair. The promotional materials help guide the way for what products are right for you, and there are definitely those that speak to people of color and those that don’t.

This is the last of three posts in a multi-post series about promotional language addressed to people of color.

Self-Promotion Across Race Lines

Though it is essential to networking and moving along in the professional world, promoting myself has always been a challenge of mine. For some professions it is a regular and necessary task. This is often the case for freelancers, small businesses, and politicians and those running for other elected offices. It is essential for them to promote themselves and prove that they are the best choice to fulfill the consumer’s needs. With this type of position, it is still necessary to have a target audience and be familiar with what they want and need from you and the service you provide. However, with self-promotion it is necessary to have some degree of people skills as well. Simply put, if your consumer’s don’t like you there’s a good chance you won’t get that business.

Self-promotion can be defined as “the practice of purposefully trying to present oneself as highly competent to other people” but more importantly, this is often done when people want to be “perceived by others as capable, intelligent, or talented” (iResearchNet.com). This may be easy or natural to some people, especially if they are trying to promote themselves to people they are used to being around/working with. But what about when it comes to people, ethnicities, and races that you’re not familiar with?

One important thing to remember is that they are human with different life experiences that you may not have familiarity with and there should be a sensitivity to this when interacting. Other than that, it is not a stretch to say that if you are promoting your services or capabilities to them, then they are in search of the same general service as the other audience you are targeting. Their wants and needs may differ from others (just as each individual has their own wants and needs anyway), which is why general promotional strategies are important but understand their different experience is essential. An example to see self-promotion in action across race lines and to people of color is with the current political race for President of the United States. This specific election has high opinions on both sides; my intent is to provide how both candidates promote themselves to people of color, specifically black people.

It is no secret that the United States is becoming a minority-majority nation, which means that the majority of citizens will be “minorities.” According to the US Census Bureau, more than half of children in the US are expected to be “part of a minority race or ethnic group by 2020” and that by 2060 the minority population will be over fifty percent, dictating no single group will be the majority in the country (US News). Because of this, it is essential for the next President to understand and appeal to minorities in the country.

Experts claim that major concerns have been raised about potential vision-related adverse effects caused by regular use of impotence medicines. cheapest cialis india Donald Trump, at his highest point, is receiving two percent support from the black community. This is because, according to research by the Washington Post, 83 percent of black people feel that he is bias towards women and minorities, and 87 percent of black voters would be anxious if he was elected. It isn’t hard to understand why, especially if you have kept up with the news and soundbites of his speeches. In his effort to promote himself, he started a campaign to cast doubt of President Obama’s US citizenship, he has gathered support for his presidency from a former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard, and, contrary to the statistics that say otherwise, he says “You live in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?” when talking about why he should be voted for. His self-promotion tactic is that he is different than other candidates because he’s not a politician and can change the system, yet he ignores the cultural and background differences his black audience has.

Hilary Clinton is the opposite of the spectrum in terms of black support, with support ranging from 85 to 93 percent depending on which poll (as of Sept 26, IBTimes reported 93 percent). Her self-promotion techniques are very opposite to her opponent. Throughout this election, she has been detailing her “lifelong journey of racial awareness” including talking to the parents of a murdered black teenager and appealing to the specific changes blacks are looking for (Politico).  Most recently, she used her platform on the presidential debate by using language synonymous with the racial justice movement that is being “embraced by a new generation of young black activists” (New York Times) showing that she is familiar with the changes that must be made.

Both of these candidates are clearly using different means of self-promotion to promote themselves to black people. One is also clearly more successful than the other. However, it may be too late to recover his self-promotion damage. In a Time Magazine article discussing self-promotion, a study is discussed that revealed “showing that when we try to make people like us, we often come across as braggy and annoying.” There is a fine line between promotion of your perceived accomplishments and abilities and bragging about them. This is a line that politicians, freelancers, and business owners must know and tread well. One step over can cause the loss of business, or in this case supporters.

This is the second of three posts in a multi-post series about promotional language addressed to people of color.
